Episode 7: Is Be the Change a Christian Organization?

Is there potential for something better? You have the potential to do something about it. No. You CAN do something about it, so no excuses. Where? As far as your impact can have.

^That is my interpretation of “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” It is a quote that has stuck with me from the very first time I heard it. I have never really paid attention to who said it. Until the day that scarred me forever.

No joke.

I was basically disowned by a Christian adult that I did mission work with because I chose that quote; a quote by Gandhi who is Hindu. (I literally had to google what religion he was because I did not choose the quote because of him or because of Hinduism.) I understand that the reasoning went deeper to the fact that I did not create Be the Change as faith based organization.

And y’all I am not going to lie, I felt like I was sucker punched from out. of. no. where. Are you kidding me?

All I knew was: There is power in diversity and we were not going to be an organization about forcing Christianity on people. Would we share the gospel to our patients and pray before we serve? Yes. Would we force our team to partake? No. Did I want God to be glorified through our work? Yes. Did I think it would be important to put that in my mission statement?

Heck, I did even know how to even fricken write one!

I did not think mission statement were that important because I literally never knew the mission statement of any of the organizations I volunteered. Why?

Because I could see their mission in action.

Here is a perfect example (thanks to my good friend Sarah!). Do you know Chick-Fil-A's mission statement? Probably not. BUT I bet you DO know they are closed on Sundays.

According to google, Chick-fil-A does not even HAVE an official mission statement. A 4.6 BILLION dollar company does not focus on the contents of their mission statement or their lack thereof…

Google goes on to say that Chick-fil-A EXPRESSES their mission through its purpose. “To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.”

Y'all… Words are words. Let’s not get tripped up on that.

So is Be the Change a Christian organization? Get to know us and see what you think. Hopefully it would be undeniable that it is only because of God’s guidance that Be the Change is able to achieve what it has and will achieve.

Am I a perfect christian, no? But if you got to know me, I would hope you can see Christ through me- if not then I have some work to do. And I always will.
